Maximising Tyre Lifespan: Easy Tips for Maintenance

Maintaining your tyres is crucial as they play a significant role in keeping your car on the move. The age of your tyres is discreetly marked on their sides. It’s not just about a casual glance; tyres older than five years require thorough inspection every three to six months. Weather can mess them up! Tyres are the most testing part of a vehicle, and they need more care from a tyre shop than any other part of your Ute.

In most cases, tyres don’t age significantly before they’re installed on your car. However, specialised tyres meant for rough terrain or racing demand diligent care. If you have a surplus of tyres, storing them correctly is essential, ensuring proper storage and maintenance are upheld.

  • Keep them Clean

Soap and water, no strong stuff! Dry them well! Cleaning them using basic stuff extends the longevity for good.

  • Inspect them

Look for wear, cuts, or stuff stuck in them. Sun can make them crack or change colour. How many rubbers are left tells a lot. Whether summer or winter, scorching sun can significantly impact any time; hence, tyres must be checked constantly.

  • Air Them Up

Proper pressure keeps them in shape, with no flat bits! If they sit too long, move your car now and then. Overly high or low pressure can make the tyres prone to surrendering to road conditions.

The key? Keep them away from the sun, chemicals, and bad spots. Got more than one set? Store them just right! Even a stationary car can cause trouble, so occasional movements are recommended. Roads have too much to offer, and driving with great caution can help your tyres stay away from the stuff lying

  • The storage location matters

An excellent, dry, dark spot is ideal, shielding them from the sun’s damaging rays. Inadequate shade? Cover them up! The tyres must always be covered; otherwise, their exposure can lead to many external agents hurting them.

  • Placement is key

If not mounted, stand them side by side to maintain their shape. Mounted ones can hang or sit in a way that does not mess them up. But remember, stacking might not be friendly to fancy tyres. Do not stack up tyres one over another or put anything else on them, as it can start decreasing the lifeline at a micro level.

Use covers to shield them from dust, water, and light. But be cautious; covers that trap moisture are a big no-no! Covers are always good, but not if the tyres have gained moisture or got wet.

  • Regular check-ups are essential

Monitor them every few months to ensure they are not aging prematurely or succumbing to pests or harsh weather conditions. Continuous checking is a must.

  • Keep them away from harmful substances

Materials like oils or chemicals can spell trouble for your beloved tyres. They can have a detrimental effect.

  • Occasionally move them if stacked

Prevent deformities and keep the tyres in a round, top-notch shape. Any tweaks in shape can be dangerous.

Remember, even if unused, tyres age. Past 5-6 years? They might need special attention or even a replacement. Beware of when tyres need an actual replacement.
